Introduction to MJML email templates

This article will guide you through what MJML is, why it's a game-changer in email design, and how this shift will benefit your email marketing efforts.

What is MJML?

MJML stands for Mailjet Markup Language. It's an open-source markup language specifically designed to simplify the process of creating responsive email templates. Email design is a very tricky business as there are so many variants such as screen size, operating system, email client and much more. MJML simplifies this whole process as it gets rid of the complexity of responsive HTML coding and provides a framework that automatically generates high-quality, responsive code suitable for any email client and screen size.

MJML vs. traditional HTML in email design

The primary difference between MJML and traditional HTML lies in simplicity and efficiency. HTML requires extensive knowledge of responsive design practices and you need to be a coding wizz to ensure compatibility and visual consistency across different email clients and devices. If you look at any HTML code, normally, the first 800 lines of code make that email responsive to work across all devices and email clients.

On the other hand, MJML simplifies this process significantly. It uses a set of pre-built components, such as columns, images, buttons, and text blocks, that you can easily combine to create professional-looking email templates. When you write an email in MJML, the language's engine automatically converts it into responsive HTML, handling all the intricacies of email client compatibility behind the scenes. This all means that an HTML email with over 2000 lines of code is now only less than 50 lines of code when written in MJML.

MJML streamlines email template creation, making it more accessible, less time-consuming, and more reliable in terms of cross-client compatibility compared to traditional HTML.

Transitioning from HTML to MJML email templates

At Ticketsolve, our goal is to make our technology as simple and as straightforward to use as possible. Obviously, not everything can be made easy to use, especially when emails are involved but we have made our transition over to MJML as easy as we can make it.

We have already created and built all the email templates for you and we believe that these templates will include the majority of information that most organisations want in their emails. We have also created a bunch of email content blocks that allow you to drop these blocks into any of our email templates.

We’ve also standardised the main design aspect of creating your emails by adding an Email tab into the "look and feel" setting within your Ticketsolve account. This means you’ll no longer need to use third-party software to design your email templates; it is done directly within Ticketsolve. From the look and feel settings you can create the style of each template by adding your email header and footer, changing the colour of different aspects within the email such as text colour, CTA colour background colour, etc.

This new innovation will open up so many possibilities and it lays the foundation for our new email marketing tool that will be coming to Ticketsolve in the future.

Moving from traditional HTML to MJML isn't just a technology change; it's a step towards a more efficient, creative, and enjoyable email design experience. MJML opens the door to faster development times, consistent cross-client compatibility, and a focus on creativity without the hassle of complex coding.

  • Hi,

Thanks for this update - really useful to understand more. Currently, we use if/when HTML coding on our emails to create different branding for each of our subsites. How will we do this using MJML?
