In this article we are going to take a look at setting up a product specific email automation in Mailchimp. This will allow you to easily contact customers who purchase a specific product from you, this applies to both box office and online sales.
Please find a helpful video below as well as a step by step how to.
- Click on Create Campaign and select email.
- Select Automation, Ecommerce and the 'follow up on purchases' option.
- Select Specific Product, name your campaign and ensure you have your master list selected from the dropdown.
- Click begin, and this will take you to your automation. In this section you need to change the 'trigger' to suit the needs of your automation.
- Click edit and adapt the time to the time you would like to lapsed in between the product being bought and the email being sent. Here you can also select the product you wish the automation to apply to.
- If you want to stop the email going out to historic bookers, use the 'filter by segment or tag' edit to exclude these customers from the automation.
- Once the trigger is updated you are free to design your email in the usual way and start your automation!
The automation will now automatically send each time a customer purchases the product specified in the trigger.

Hi Aofie. In this webinar (somewhere), I'm sure you said that once you set up and send the 'thanks for your donation' automated email, it would automatically retrospectively be sent to everyone that had donated. Does that sending happen immediately, or 24 hours after you've set the automation up?
Hi Aoife, does the customer who purchases the product need to be opted in to receive marketing emails from us (ie on our main MailChimp list) in order to receive this email from Mailchimp, or will it send to anyone who purchases, including those who are not opted in for marketing emails?
Thanks a mill,
Mark
Hi Mark,
Yes, the customer who purchases the product must be opted in to receive marketing emails from you in order to receive this or any Mailchimp email.
Hey Mark and Jonathan,
Jonathan (sorry for delay!) but if you want to stop the email going out to historic bookers, use the 'filter by segment or tag' edit to exclude these customers from the automation.
Mark, Mailchimp will only send out to customers who are opted in for email. I'd recommend an email note in the donation settings so that anyone who donates will get that text in their regular confirmation email. Then anyone opted in for email will get the follow-up automation from MC. Your Mailchimp Audience list synced with Ticketsolve will only ever be people who have opted in for email :)
Thanks,
Aoife
