Introduction to Discounts

In this article we are going to look at the basics of Discounts, what the different areas of the Discount section area, and how to create a Discount. Ticketsolve's Discount functionality allows you to create a wide-range of promotions that are tailored to your specific needs, such as 2 for 1 tickets, money off, group rates, or exclusive/priority access.

Creating a Discount

Go to Manage > Discounts.

Click on Add New+ to start your new discount.

1. Enter a distinctive name for your offer, such as 'August Promotion'.

2. Add a Description (optional).

3. Turn the Active discount? toggle to on (blue) to make it active.

4. Select the Start date for your promotion (optional). Setting a date here means the discount will start working at 00:01 on the date selected. E.g., if you select the 1st August, the discount will start working at 00:01 on 1st August.

5. Select the End date for your promotion (optional). Setting a date here means the discount will stop working at 00:01 on the date selected. E.g., if you select 31st August, the discount will stop working at 00:01 on 31st August (so at the end of the 30th August).

6. Add the Priority number (optional). Priority numbers are used to determine which discount is first applied to a ticket, if there are multiple discounts active that could apply to the same line item. 99 is the highest priority, 1 is the lowest.

7. Add a Tag to easily identify your offer in reports (optional).

 Important

If you use subdomain tags make sure to tag the discount here with the relevant Subdomain Tag. If you do not apply the tag, the discount will not work on any subdomain. This is required for the discount to work both at Box Office and online.

8. Click the Save New button.

 Important

Only one promotion code can be used in a transaction, and the Discount / Promo code with the highest priority number on it will be applied.

For Discounts not using a promotion code (so applying automatically), if you have more than one discount applicable to the line item, they are applied in priority order (descending from 99). While you can have multiple discounts applying (as long as more than 1 doesn't use a promotional code), it is not recommended to use more than one offer at a time to avoid confusion.

Rules tab

The rules tab is where you determine what happens when a customer does something, such as get 10% off full-price tickets when they use a promotion code, or get 2 tickets for the price of 1 when they buy exactly 2 tickets to a set show.

When customer...

The When customer section is where we determine what the customer has to do in order to receive the Discount.

First, we click +Add New.

The options to choose from are:

  • Buy at least - the customer must buy at least X number of tickets for the discount to apply. This is most used for group discounts, e.g., the customer must buy at least 10 tickets (in order to get 10% off all tickets).
  • Buys exactly - the customer must buy exactly X number of tickets for the discount to apply. This is most used for offers like 2 for 1, e.g. the customer must buy exactly 2 tickets (in order to get 100% off one ticket). If the customer buys 4 tickets, they then get 100% off 2 tickets.
  • Use promotion code - the customer must input a promotional code either on the Show page or the Cart page online, or added to the Cart at Box Office.
  • Online order - the order must be placed online, not at the Box Office or via Phone.
  • Buy package product - this option is used only for creating a specific type of discount called Package Products.

Multiple rules can be added here, but when multiple rules are added, all rules must apply to the line items in order for the discount set in the Customer gets section to apply. For example:

When customer...

  • Buys at least 10 tickets

AND

  • Uses promotion code

The customer will need to buy 10+ tickets and enter the required promotion code in order to gain the discount specified - only doing one out of the two rules will not work.

Customer gets...

The Customer gets is where we decide what discount the customer will receive, once they have met the rules specified in the When customer section.

Click +Add New and then add your rule.

There are a couple of fields to complete, and these will change depending on what options you select:

Access - to decide what kind of discount it will be. The options are:

  • All (e.g. all tickets for show...)
  • Exactly X tickets (e.g. 2 tickets for show...)
  • Exclusive access (e.g. exclusive access to show...) - if selecting this, you would need to make sure that Uses promotion code is selected in the When customer... section

For - this is to determine what the discount applies to. The options are:

  • tickets
  • products
  • a single product
  • unique shows
  • unique events
  • unique shows per day

In - to determine what show/event/product etc., the rule is applying to. The options are:

  • any show (any show in the account).
  • show (e.g. a specific show).
  • event (a specific event)
  • ticket allocation (a specific ticket allocation).
  • shows with tag (a group of shows, determined by a set Show Tag).
  • events with tag (a group of events, determined by a set Event Tag).
  • ticket allocations with tag (a group of ticket allocations, determined by a Ticket Allocation Tag).
  • program
  • event category

Define pricing - this is where we can decide if the discount should apply to every ticket price (within the previous show/event etc., that we've selected) or not. The options are:

  • at any price (e.g. any ticket price available within the show we have selected).
  • at price (e.g. a specific ticket price only within the show that we have selected).
  • in pricing scheme (e.g. a specific pricing scheme within the show that we have selected).
  • prices with tag (e.g. a group of ticket prices, determined by a Ticket Price Tag, within the show that we have selected).

Discount - where we decide how to apply the discount. Note: This is always per ticket, and there is no way to apply a discount to a whole Cart. The options are:

  • with amount off (per ticket).
  • with percent off (per ticket).

Limit - this is where we can decide if we want to restrict the discount. The options are:

  • Any number of times - for nearly-all discounts, this is what we want to select.
  • Purchase limit - this is only applicable if you are using a promotion code discount, and giving a unique promotion code to each customer. This a hard limit on the number of tickets that can be bought at one time. So if the purchase limit is set to 2 then a customer can only buy a maximum of  2 tickets.
    • For example, you might use the purchase limit in conjunction with an exclusive access with promotion code offer, so that a customer gets exclusive access to a show but can only buy a maximum of 2 tickets. With a purchase limit, the customer cannot buy more than the specified number of tickets, with or without a discount.
  • Discount limit - this is only applicable if you are using a promotion code discount, and giving a unique promotion code to each customer. The discount limit is the maximum number of times that a discount can be used. Customers can still buy tickets beyond the discount limit but no discount will apply.
    • For example, you might use the discount limit in conjunction with a promotion code discount to get 10% off 2 tickets. If the discount limit is set to 2, then each promotion code will allow 2 tickets to be discounted by 10%. The customer can purchase more than 2 tickets, but only 2 will be discounted and the rest will be at full price.
